Inside the Head of the CEO

What goes on inside the head of the CEO?

I have often said to C-suite denizens that 15 minutes inside the head would make most of them freak out. Intimate conversations reveal a kaleidoscope of simultaneous thoughts about people, strategies, deals, upcoming events, problem-solving, overdue initiatives, financing, short term earnings, current cash flow, family matters and much more.

Often, the CEO has (but dare not express) concerns about her or his own leadership and focus. They find it helpful to step back periodically, however briefly, and reflect on a list of topics developed with them, including:

What is my job as CEO this quarter, this year (the few priorities that only I can lead)?

Is my reaction to incoming stress the right balance of thoughtful and emotion-driven?

Am I making the right time choices (at work)?
Can I make better time choices (work and life)?
Am I tending relationships with subordinates effectively?
How can I do a better job in meetings? At active listening?

What are my “no-fly zones (topics I don’t want to discuss or feedback I don’t want to hear)” and are they appropriate?

Should I revisit my approach to my own fitness and wellness?

What are my options for improving communications (including to and from the front lines)? How do I find out what no one wants to tell me?
At what do I want to get better this year? What is the motivation?

No matter what leadership role you occupy, you may wish to do your own reflection.

And if you are not in the very top spot, add “How can I become more of a go-to for the CEO and for my organization?”

That’s my view. What’s yours?
